Dr. Beyer’s Blog

I would estimate that 90% of my patients that come to me have some sort of digestive complaints, most have multiple digestive symptoms. Constipation, diarrhea, bloating, acid reflux, gas and pain lead the list. But what most people don’t realize is that many digestive problems lead to multiple symptoms outside the gut especially the skin, immune system, sinuses and most of all the brain!
In my 29 years of practice if there is one thing I have learned and that is any digestive problem can have far reaching negative impacts on our health. The sad news is that traditional medicine, for the most part, doesn’t recognize what has been scientifically proven and even if it did most digestive problems never have and never will respond to pharmaceuticals.
Today I want to discuss what is known as leaky gut syndrome or increased intestinal permeability.

Here are the take away messages:

  • Anything that causes digestive inflammation will eventually breakdown the barrier the gut and our blood stream.
  • When this barrier is too permeable (leaky) larger then normal food particles, bacteria and toxins make their way into the blood stream and create excessive immune responses.
  • These excessive immune responses create inflammation in the entire body and brain causing a myriad of symptoms. ( please see my video on my you-tube and Facebook page “ 10 symptoms of leaky gut syndrome)
  • Leaky gut is THE GATEWAY to immune dysfunction and autoimmune disease.
  • Leaky gut can be tested for and repaired.
  • There is massive amounts of scientific studies that show the effects of LGS and the brain.
  • If LGS occurs before the age of 3, when the brain is still developing, this can be a huge factor in neurodevelopmental delays seen in the spectrum disorders (ADD,ADHD, Asperger’s, Autism), speech apraxia, poor motor skills, poor learning skills etc.
  • When LGS develops in adults this is a major contributor to psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety and OCD.
    LGS is a major contributor to the cause of protein aggregation in the brain cells seen in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases such as, Suprannuclear palsy, corticobasilar degeneration, Lewy body dementia, multiple systems atrophy, fronto-temporal dementia and cerebellar atrophy. All of which (especially Alzheimer’s) is skyrocketing in our society.

Here’s the long and short of it. … When the lining in our small intestine breaks down it’s like having holes in a screen door on a hot summer day. Bugs and things not desired in the home will make their way in. When this happens in the body a cascade of inflammatory chemicals are released affecting the entire body and brain. This can set into motion the above mentioned effects on the brain but also the following;
• Chronic arthritic pain in joints and muscle
• Skin issues such as acne, rashes, Psoriasis, Eczema, Rosacea and hives.
• Autoimmune disease
• Food sensitivities
• Chronic sinus and lung problems
